Letter from IOC President Tomas Bach

Dear President,

On behalf of the Olympic Movement, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for your contribution and dedication to ensuring the success of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad Rio de Janeiro.

The first Olympic Games in South America were concluded on Sunday night with the spectacular Closing Ceremony in the iconic Maracanã stadium. During the past 19 days, the world’s best athletes provided us with thrilling competitions and memorable performances in stunning venues and the whole world witnessed the Brazilians’ warmth, hospitality and passion for sports. The broadcast of the Games reached record numbers of viewers and unparalleled numbers engaged with the Games through social and digital media.

In addition, the Games have transformed this stunning city and enhanced the lives of Cariocas.

Your commitment and leadership in addressing challenges and keeping a focus on your sport and your athletes were the key factor for the success of the Games.

The involvement of the Olympic IFs in the delivery of the Games in Rio has been higher than ever and we will ensure that the IF involvement carries on for future Olympic Games. The strong partnership between the IOC and the Olympic Summer IFs has helped in the resolution of many important issues in the built up and during the Games. 2 Once more, I would like to thank AIBA for the work accomplished in the context of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and look forward to continuing our close collaboration as we work towards the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

I am delighted to have shared your sport and shared these memorable moments with you.

Yours sincerely,
