Arbor Day is to publicize the protection of trees and actively participate in afforestation in accordance with the law. According to the length of time, the the International Arbor Day can be divided into tree planting day, tree planting week and tree planting month. Its aim  is to promote and inspire people's enthusiasm for afforestation, realize the importance of environmental protection.

Chinese Arbor Day was proposed by Mr. Daoyang Lin, Mr. An Han, Mr.Yili Pei and other foresters in 1915. It was originally set on the Qingming Festival (the Tomb-sweeping Day ) each year. In memory of Sun Yat-sen, March 12, his death anniversary, was decided as the new Arbor Day in 1928. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1979, the sixth session of the Fifth National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China officially approved to celebrate Arbor Day on March 12 proposed by the State Council under the proposal of Mr. Xiaoping Deng.

The Arbor Day emblem is a symbol of general meaning:

1. The tree shape, which means that the national obligation to plant 3 to 5 trees, everyone is engaged in greening the motherland.

2. "Chinese Arbor Day" and "March 12" represent the transformation of nature for the benefit of mankind, and the determination and perseverance to plant trees every year.

2. Five trees can be understood as "forest", thus extending and connecting the outer circle, showing the greening of the motherland, and realizing the virtuous cycle of the natural ecological system.

Arbor Day is to advocate and encourage people to plant trees, care for trees, and take trees seriously. Trees play a very important role in the survival of human beings and the ecological environment of the earth.

Professor Des, from Calcutta agricultural university, India, calculated the ecological value of a tree as below:

A 50-year-old tree, cumulatively, is worth about $31,200;

Absorbing harmful gases and preventing air pollution is worth about $62,500;

Increased soil fertility is worth about $31,200;

Water conservation value of $37,500;

Providing breeding grounds for birds and other animals costs $31,250;

Producing protein is worth $2,500,

The total value is about $196,000
