IOC LATEST NEWS OPTIONS Highlights of the week

Last weekend, IOC President Jacques Rogge took part in the opening ceremony of the 11th Winter European Youth Olympic Festival in Brasov (Romania), in the presence of IOC member and European Olympic Committees (EOC) President Patrick Joseph Hickey and Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

Returning to Lausanne, President Rogge met IOC member Uğur Erdener, accompanied by Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Suat Kiliç.


Last week in Lausanne, the IOC and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) met IOC member Syed Shahid Ali and Pakistan NOC President Syed Arif Hasan. During this meeting, all aspects of the situation currently prevailing in the Olympic Movement in Pakistan were reviewed. Full details (News section). 


From 18 to 20 February, the Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016 Games paid its fourth visit to the Brazilian host city. Led by Nawal El Moutawakel, the Commission examined the progress made with the Olympic project and received updates from the organisers and their partners on their plans. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has just launched “Inside Athletics”, a new social media experience hosted by four-time Olympic medallist Ato Boldon. On 15 and 16 February, 87 delegates representing 51 member federations of the World Rowing Association (FISA) met in Copenhagen (Denmark) and took a number of decisions, mainly concerning changes to its statutes and rules. The FISA Council also awarded Thessaloniki (Greece) the 2014 World Rowing Coastal Championships, which will be held in October. Info at

Several meetings were held between 29 January and 12 February at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG)’s headquarters in Lausanne. The participants reviewed all aspects of the FIGAcademy and Age Group Programmes. Each of the meetings was led by FIG 1st Vice-President Slava Corn, who is responsible on the FIG Executive Committee for overseeing the education programmes, and by Hardy Fink, the Director of FIG Education and Academy Programmes. 
On 17 February in Lasuanne, the FIG and the Cirque du Soleil (CdS) extended their partnership launched in 2009, concluding a new agreement that will run for the course of the current Olympic cycle from 2013 to 2016. The agreement was signed by FIG President Bruno Grandi and CdS Casting & Performance Vice-President Bernard Petiot. The FIG Executive Committee had met beforehand from 14 to 16 February. On 16 and 17 February in Dublin (Ireland), the International Rugby Board (IRB) organised its first conference aimed at boosting women’s participation in the disciplinary process. This conference brought together 16 northern hemisphere Union representatives from the legal, rugby judicial, playing and match officiating fraternity who were identified as having the potential to perform at domestic, elite and international level.
Rugby sevens will make its debut at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing before making its Olympic appearance at the Rio Games in 2016. In Nanjing, the competition will bring together players from six nations. Detailed info at

National tennis associations will join the world’s leading tennis stars to celebrate the inaugural World Tennis Day on 4 March, as part of the centenary activities of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in 2013. This Day was launched by the ITF and StarGames in November 2012 at the Davis Cup final in Prague (Czech Republic), the aim being to promote tennis participation worldwide. Info

German daily newspaper “Bild Zeitung” reporter and editor Herbert Jung has received the International Ski Federation (FIS)’s Journalist Award for his accomplishments as one of the longest serving Alpine ski journalists. During his career, he has attended 21 world championships and several Olympic Games. FIS President and IOC member Gian Franco Kasper, presented the award to Herbert Jung. 
During the Alpine World Ski Championships, the FIS Council met in Schladming (Austria) on 12 February. The Ladies’ Alpine Ski World Cup 2013/2014 calendar was confirmed. More info at


The Cameroon NOC has just informed us that the 3rd edition of the Cameroon National Games took place in Douala from 17 to 22 December 2012. This edition also saw the participation of athletes fromGabon, the Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea. Info at

The Colombian NOC and the Coldeportes Institute have signed a sports agreement with the government of Qatar. NOC Secretary General Alberto Ferrer Vargas and Coldeportes Director and IOC member Andrés Botero Phillipsbourne signed this agreement at a meeting organised at Nariño Palace, in the presence of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and the Emir of Qatar, Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani. This agreement will come into force in once month, and will allow for the exchange of professionals between the two countries in an academic framework. Detailed info at

19 February saw the 2nd Master’s in Coaching and Sports Management Day, organised by theSpanish NOC in collaboration with the University of Barcelona, in the presence of NOC President Alejandro Blanco. This Masters is taking place over 15 days from February to November 2013 at the NOC headquarters. The 20 or so participants, who are all linked to high-level sport, include Olympic sailing champion ángela Pumariega. Info at

At the British Olympic Association’s Board of Directors meeting last week, Andy Hunt announced his decision to step down as Chief Executive at the end of February to pursue other opportunities. Andy Hunt was appointed Chief Executive in 2008 and was Chef de Mission of the British delegation at theLondon 2012 Games. Info at

The Latvian NOC has informed us that London Games medallist lapel pins have been awarded to Latvian medallists Maris Strombergs, Olympic BMX champion; Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins,beach volleyball bronze medallists, both represented respectively by Janis Celmins (personal manager); and Almers Ludviks (Latvian Volleyball Federation President). A ceremony was held in December 2012 during the meeting of the Executive Committee of the NOC, whose President is Aldons Vrublevskis, in the presence of representatives of the national federations and the media. The Venezuelan NOC’s General Assembly was held on 15 February, with the participation of representatives of 32 federations out of the 42 affiliated to the NOC. The NOC’s reports and accounts for 2012 were approved unanimously. This Assembly was inaugurated by the Governor of the State of Anzoátegui, Aristóbulo Isturiz.
